Wow your storey really blows me away. I also have similar beliefs. LA is a chance to change some ones life through the soul satisfying act of design. I grew up in the outer subs of sydney which often were filled with refugees and immigrants trying to make a new start in life. Watching the way the city shapped peoples views about themselves made me come to the realisation of how much power the landscape and as such the city authorities have in making people feel good/proud/empowered.
Your strength is inspiring.
