Reaching the Oil Peak: What Do We Do?

"Urging the world to brace for a "really big reshuffle" in energy expectations, Christophe de Margerie, CEO of French energy giant Total SA, said he expected oil production to plateau in just 12 years at 94 million barrels a day — less then 10 million barrels more than available now. And he warned the forecast was optimistic."
"We will have to fight against the natural decline of (present) oil fields," he told the same forum Khelil attended. "It will not go smoothly."

Hello Mark,

My name is Willie. I live in Castaic, CA. I've been working doing "real gardening" since leaving the nursery trade at the end of 2003. I see so much plant brutality by "gardeners" that I decided to see what I could do to help. All it takes is a little plant knowledge which is easy enough to obtain. It's just that these "mow-and-blow" crews don't take the time, don't have the knowledge and aren't being paid to do real gardening anyway.

People out here need to lose the lawns. It's nearly desert after all. The native plant community is called "Chaparrel" -- evergreen shrubs and subshrubs with spring color from annuals which come up after our rainy season, then die away before summer.

What do you do?

Willie

Thanks for the invite. My work is in the Community Development Department here in Coronado, overseeing the development of the "island" as the "current planning" go-to guy. I really never thought I would end up working in an agency, especially here! My background is in landscape development in the private sector until 1998, when I becaome a civil servant.

I will enjoy this website, it will keep me apprised of the outside world in L/A!

Ok, got it. I've also done work exclusively with LandFX for the past 2 1/2 years, mostly irrigation. It's a great program, saves me tons of time and aggrivation. I'll be sure to keep you in mind, as sometimes I get large projects and need help. Recently however, work is hard to come by, but I just plod on along waiting for this suckie economy to change. I think we need to out source all 3 branch's of government back to the American People before anything will change! Ughhh

Mark,
I didn't understand your note, did you mean you use LandFX? That is the design package I use exclusive, with AutoCAD 2010 of course.

Anyway nice to meet you.

"Historically inspired minimalism"...that's a great expression!

Yes....I edit things down a lot!! In this garden I think I kept the surface patina of a Mayan temple visual experience but removed all of the underlying structural ornamentation and rusticated stone. It's contemporary but there is a thin layer of age to it. I'm always analyzing the feeling one gets when you are at a place of spiritual contemplation. There is an "awe" factor but at the same time there is also a feeling of peace and contemplation. You get wowed and then you get relaxed

I am very flattered that you find inspiration in the garden!
I've always been interested in temple architecture...places of focused spirituality and meditation, regardless of the faith. While designing this garden I kept referencing hillside temples I had seen in Mexico and Peru and the beautiful cenotes which are naturally occuring deep ponds of the bluest water that tectonic forces have cut into the rock. Then I abstracted and edited these ideas down to a minimum. Also, my client was a very Type A real estate developer so I really wanted him to slow down and relax and have something that was very easy on the eyes and restful(there is a lot of visual "noise" in Los Angeles).
