Sometimes one must sell the drawings to get the plan built.
My RLA supervisor once had me change a concept plan drawing because it 'had too many circles on it'. It wasn't about the design he further explained, but more about what the plan looked li…
Ahh, it seems the 'finding a balance' arguement works here. Until we stop buiding roads, highways, bridges, houses, shopping malls, schools, churches and other buildings and structures, places like this will exisit. I'd venture to say that hardscape…
Sure, transportation costs of stone = energy lost, but what are the other sustainability arguments against using stone?
It doesn't really require chemicals to install or maintain. It has good insulating properties. Depending on installation methods…
The common definitions of landscape urbanism that I've seen are simply good planning and design techniques that have been in use for decades, if not centuries. It isn't new, but now it has a catch phrase.
What is your rationale for making successful = sustainable instead of profitable or sellable? And what definition of sustainable are you using? It seems that your answers mix up a variety of values that may or may not contribute to profitablity or s…
A good way to get an installed planting price estimate is to go over previous bids for plantings. They tend to vary on how they show you what you would be paying for, but you can usually figure out what the total price is for the listed plants and m…
This is a very interesting question... how about updating the costs and pricing, does anyone call various contractors, material yards, and/or nurseries to see how material pricing changes or has change in recent months or are you using "stock" prici…

Hey Lori, did you take the exam yesterday? I felt much better about it this time....had a better idea of what to study--although of course there's always something you don't expect! Guess we'll wait & see how it comes out,
cheers,
wendy
I am hosting a study group at my office to study for section E. We meet at 5:30 Thursday evening usually for 1 1/2 hours. There are 4 or 5 folks who show up to kick things around. You are welcome to come. My office is at 3645 Wallingford Avenue North, Seattle 98103. We are on the SW corner of Wallingford Avenue North and 37th. Parking is free at the back of the building.
thanks Lori, that was helpful....I guess I'll pony up some more $$ and do the review. I am also signed up for John Fain's workshop--the site design workshop was great, so I hope I am covering all the bases.
wish me luck, we are all going to pass this time!
Hey Lori, when did you move to Seattle? did you get a job up there? I am jealous, it's been pretty darn hot here....I have passed the first 4 sections on the first try but failed grading this time, will have to try again in December. Did you find a website with study materials out there? I thought I had practiced everything but there were some combinations of stuff on the test that stumped me....anyway hope you are doing well, cheers, Wendy Meyer
Thanks, Lori, I think with the amount of info being circulated on this site as well as practice tests I've acquired from review sessions, I just might make it.
Hi There Lori-
I believe URS re-imburses all expenses after you have successfully passed your LARE and acquired your license, but it still sounds kind of vague. I know you have to come up with the initial funds yourself though. I am working with another RLA here in the Community Development Group of the Phoenix office, our supervisor is of course a P.E. I was hired by an RLA who has since left for another firm. You many email me at Ron_Pizmoht@urscorp.com if you have any other questions. Have a great day!
I checked it out. Some good stuff. Makes me feel more confident about taking the exam. I guess the book from our pro practice class is the best one to prepare for the multiple choice section. is that what you found?
