Golf Course Architecture & Design

Golf course design is arguably the purest form of landscape architecture. If designed properly it displays stewardship towards the land & complements its natural form and features. It is at the core of landscape architecture & ought to be embraced.

Ryan, to answer your question from November, I am an avid golfer with a single digit handicap. I was drawn to golf design because I had a love for the game, then developed a love for the golf design industry and golf architecture. Something romantic about the whole industry to me.

I think you have to be a good stick in order to be respected in the golf design scene. A lot of business is done on the golf course in the golf industry and if you are a bad player, you lose respect and potentially lose business, in my opinion.

Fix, repair or replace all those hardscape areas used for erosion control such as in the photo above. Try a vegetatable solution that is a permanent repair to many erosion issues. With the value of 1sq ft of golf course being as high as it is it is shame for erosion to eat it up. Deltalok USA Ecology Units will provide a permanent vegetatable solution.

I'm curious to know how many people that have joined this group are avid golfers? Is it the game that draws you in, the passion for course design or both?

Wow! It's awesome to see such a great diversity of people from around the world expressing common interest in Golf Course Architecture, a very unique area of design in the realm of Landscape Archtecture! If anyone has any thoughts or a creative approach to golf course design please share your thoughts!

No problem, Radu! Glad to help.

As for the conceptual design, it should be a general routing plan with generic bunkering and golf course character. You would want to establish number of tees, size of tees and greens, etc. so that you could generate an estimate. Other things, like drainage, earthwork, etc. would have to come from past experience with sites similar to the one you are currently looking at for the new project. The final deliverable is usually a color rendering of some sort of the routing plan and surrounding development if there is any.

I don't have any projects I can post at the moment, but will look for one or two. I will let you know if I do post something.

Ryan and Chad thnx a lot great tips, its very usefull for me to learn from someone who has experiance. In Romania the golf buissnes is at the start there is not yet a high quality golf course in Romania nad playing golf its very hard here, there are no profesionals in my country on golf course design and construction, so there is space for this buissnes here.
if i get some projects i will glad colaborate with anyone interested on golf course design.

Q: Can anyone post or send me any projects regarding golf course design?

Q: What does the concept project have to contain?

Thnx a lot !!!

i have posted a sketch of a golf course concept on my portofolio on Land@lounge

Radu, Ryan's comments are on point. Of course, not everyone can do a conceptual design for the project before being awarded the project. We never did this when I was in the golf business. We always got paid for conceptual design, which is where we started with our fee, then if we determined the project was feasible, we rolled into CD's and project management. People who are wanting to build a golf course either have a lot of money or are dreaming of making a lot of money on the lot sales around the golf course, therefore, this process weeded out the pretenders really quickly.

Our conceptual design fees ranged from $20,000 to $50,000 depending on the project, then our CD fees ranged anywhere from $100,000 to $400,000. We were a regional firm without a big name, so these fees were appropriate. These fees were for a full-length 18-hole course and all of our projects were in the US.

With that being said, I would have to guess that fees have come down in this market because of supply and demand.

If you need a partner who can assist with and who has experience with golf design , we could work something out ;).

Best of luck. Getting golf work right now is tough, so if you can pull it off without any experience, you either have a great relationship with the client or you just hit the lottery!
